Chinese Tuina massage at Core Clinic in Albany on Auckland's North Shore

Tuina (pronounced “twee naw”) is a form of Oriental bodywork that has been used in China for centuries. Originating in China in 2300 B.C, Tuina is the oldest known system of massage.

A combination of massage, acupressure and other forms of body manipulation, tuina works by applying pressure to acupoints, meridians and groups of muscles or nerves to remove blockages that prevent the free flow of qi. Removing these blockages restores the balance of qi in the body, leading to improved health and vitality. Contact Core Clinic in Albany to make a booking.

Who can benefit from Tuina?

Everyone can benefit from a Tuina session. Tuina focuses upon specific problems, rather than a more generalized treatment. Tuina utilizes light to deep pressure to increase circulation and remove stagnation to help bring balance to the body, mind and spirit. It is well suited for the treatment of specific musculoskeletal disorders, sprains and strains, acute and chronic pain.

What does it feel like?

It can feel like a vigorous massage; every technique requires movement as well as pressure. After the first session you may feel a little sore but after two or three more most people adjust to the deep pressure. You can always talk to your acupuncturist and get them to adjust the pressure to your needs, we want you to be comfortable.

Are there any side effects?

As with acupuncture, Tuina can produce some side effects. A common example is the person treated for chronic back pain finding that their chronic constipation has been eased. This is because the pain treatment focuses on the Bladder meridian which links directly into the Qi energies of the large intestine. Others may not have an instant ‘positive’ side effect, it might take a few treatments. Others can feel tired or a little light headed after a Tuina session.
