Ingrown Toenails - treatment options at our North Shore and Hibiscus Coast clinics
Ingrown toenails can be ongoing painful conditions, and we seem to put up with them for longer than we should! We offer several different treatment options for ingrown toenail care.
Depending on your lifestyle, cause and history, we can advise on the best approach for your individual situation. Book a time and come and see us at one of our Core Clinic locations – Albany, Silverdale or Warkworth, north of Auckland. Please note we can only offer surgery at our Albany clinic however treatment options are available at all clinics.
Conservative treatment
If it is the first time you have had ingrown toenails or if it is a mild ingrown toenail, you will typically be offered some simple conservative measures to try. However, if there has been a history of repeated problems, your podiatrist will probably recommend a permanent surgical solution.
General treatment of ingrown toenails involves routine nail cutting to free up the nail edge, which is then cleaned with a sterile instrument. This method generally requires ongoing maintenance, depending on the shape of the toenail and the severity and duration of the condition.
Ingrown toenail surgery (Partial Nail Avulsion)
Where possible we try conservative means first, however, there are always those times where there is a persistent, painful or infected ingrown toenail and in those cases we offer nail surgery. The most common procedure we do for a more permanent fix of the ingrown toenail is called a partial nail avulsion with a chemical matrixectomy done under local anaesthetic.
This has been shown through research to be the most reliable form of procedure to reduce the risk of recurrence caused by a regrowth of the nail. Nail surgery is generally very safe, with very minimal pain afterwards, and can be safely performed in the clinic under aseptic technique setting.
The procedure carried out by the podiatrists is to remove the ingrown part of the nail under a local anaesthetic.
To stop the offending part from regrowing, a chemical is applied to the tissue from which the nail grows. This method leaves no scar on the skin and leaves most of the nail in place resulting in a good cosmetic appearance.
Why opt for the PNA?
- Are you sick of having to come in for ongoing regular care?
- Pain is becoming a daily problem?
- Onsite procedure of approx 1 hour (actual procedure is around 20 minutes)
- The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic which our trained podiatrist can administer
- Minimally invasive with only minor tenderness post treatment. Over the counter pain medication can be enough to help if needed
- Dressing kit given for home care, and re-bookings made for follow up to check on the healing.
